Debian 8 Jessie : service: control process exited, code=exited status=203, Failed to start LSB or Failed at step EXEC spawning, Exec format error

Testing the new Debian 8 codename « Jessie » , I first can’t figure why my old init script didn’t start automatically, even if it start manually… update-rc.d script.sh defaults was not showing any errors but i get this in log :

mai 06 16:36:24 web2 systemd[1]: Unit script.service entered failed state.
mai 06 16:36:42 web2 systemd[957]: Failed at step EXEC spawning /etc/init.d/script.sh: Exec format error

I also had some other various errors in systemctl status etc… like :

service: control process exited, code=exited status=203 Failed to start LSB or Failed at step EXEC spawning Exec format error

After a long search, the only way to make it work was to make a copy of the file /etc/init.d/skeleton and complete it with my own script. If you look at skeleton you’ll notice some new things.

Hope it can help someone 🙂

With Debian 8, systemd became the default init system for services. To know more about systemd on debian : https://wiki.debian.org/systemd
